As the platform grew in popularity and user base, they faced significant challenges in maintaining performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.

Problem Statement 

The client’s rapid growth exposed critical limitations in their existing infrastructure. They faced a number of pressing challenges that threatened their ability to deliver a seamless user experience and hindered further expansion. These challenges included: 

DB Scaling Issues: The existing database architecture struggled to handle the increasing volume of data and user traffic. This resulted in performance bottlenecks, slow query responses, and occasional service disruptions, impacting the user experience and potentially hindering learning progress. The database was unable to scale efficiently to accommodate the growing demands of the platform. 

High Cost: The existing infrastructure incurred substantial costs, especially concerning database management and server resources. The client needed to optimize their spending without compromising performance or reliability. The cost of maintaining and scaling the existing system was becoming unsustainable. 

Missing CI/CD Pipeline: The lack of a robust Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipeline hampered the development and deployment process. Releases were slow, error-prone, and required significant manual intervention. This slowed down the introduction of new features and updates, hindering the platform’s ability to adapt to evolving user needs. 

Onboarding Issues: The onboarding process for new users was cumbersome and time-consuming. This created friction for new users and potentially led to frustration, affecting user adoption and overall platform growth. A streamlined and efficient onboarding process was crucial for expanding their user base. 

Monolithic Application: The platform’s monolithic architecture made it difficult to isolate and scale individual components. Any changes or updates to one part of the application could potentially impact the entire system, increasing the risk of instability and downtime. Solution 

Round The Clock Technologies partnered with the EdTech platform to address these challenges and build a robust, scalable, and cost-effective infrastructure. Our approach focused on modernizing their architecture, optimizing performance, and implementing best practices for DevOps and security. The key components of our solution included: 

Multi-DB Cluster Setup on Percona: To address the database scaling issues, we implemented a multi-database cluster setup using Percona, a high-performance drop-in replacement for MySQL. This distributed database architecture allowed for horizontal scaling, enabling the platform to handle increasing data volumes and user traffic efficiently. Percona’s enhanced performance and features provided a significant improvement over the previous database setup. 

AWS Autoscaling Setup for Drupal and API: To ensure the platform could handle fluctuating user traffic, we implemented AWS autoscaling for both the Drupal frontend and the API backend. This allowed the infrastructure to automatically scale up or down based on real-time demand, ensuring optimal performance and responsiveness even during peak usage periods. Autoscaling also helped to optimize resource utilization and reduce costs by dynamically adjusting the server capacity. 

Seamless Build and Release Pipeline for all Microservices: We implemented a comprehensive CI/CD pipeline for all microservices, automating the build, test, and deployment processes. This enabled faster and more frequent releases, reduced the risk of errors, and allowed the client to introduce new features and updates more quickly. The CI/CD pipeline also facilitated better collaboration between development and operations teams.    

Implementation of WAF for Added Security: To enhance the platform’s security posture, we implemented a Web Application Firewall (WAF). The WAF provided protection against common web vulnerabilities, such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting, ensuring the platform and its users’ data remained secure. This was crucial for maintaining user trust and protecting sensitive information.
